Salzburg 0-4 Brest: Visitors maintain dream Champions League start

Abdallah Sima scored twice as Brest maintained their perfect Champions League start by thrashing Salzburg 4-0 at the Red Bull Arena, completing an Austrian double.

Brest kicked off their first-ever European campaign with a 2-1 home win over Sturm Graz two weeks ago, and they built on that victory with a clinical counterattacking performance in Salzburg on Tuesday.

Brest had one shot on target in the opening half, and it was all they required to take the lead. The visitors cleared their lines from a Salzburg attack and Ludovic Ajorque s pass found Sima, who held off his marker to slip his finish past the goalkeeper.

Salzburg had spurned chances in the opening half with Amar Dedic and Karim Konate both shooting wide, and in the second half they were completely open…

Fulham boss Silva not underestimating ´unbelievable´ Ipswich

Fulham boss Marco Silva will not underestimate Ipswich Town when his side travel to Portman Road to face the Premier League new boys on Saturday.

Fulham have three points from their first two games of 2024-25, slipping to a narrow matchday one defeat at Manchester United before bouncing back with a 2-1 win over Leicester City.

Their next outing comes against another newly promoted side in Kieran McKenna s Ipswich, who have started life in the top flight with losses to Liverpool (2-0) and Manchester City (4-1).

Silva, though, expects them to put up a real fight on home soil, hailing McKenna for instilling a winning mentality at the club.

I expect a really tough game, Silva said. They have an unbelievable winning mentality from the last two seasons.

UEFA has announced that the 25-year-old has been voted as the winner by their team of 13 technical observers including Alex Ferguson and David Moyes.

Griezmann, who signed a new long-term deal at Atletico Madrid last month, was also named in the team of the tournament after scoring six goals to win the competition s Golden Boot and assisting two more.

He could not find the net in Sunday s final, though, as hosts France went down to a shock 1-0 defeat against Portugal thanks to substitute Eder s extra-time winner.

UEFA s chief technical officer Ioan Lupescu said: Antoine Griezmann was a threat in every game he played.

He works hard for his team and possess…

Wales v Denmark: Ward and Schmeichel in the spotlight as Euro 2020 last-16 stage begins

Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey took the glory, but Wales would not be through to face Denmark in the Euro 2020 last-16 stage on Saturday without the saves of Danny Ward.

On Saturday, Ward will line up for Robert Page s side, with the man who is keeping him out of the Leicester City team, Kasper Schmeichel, in the Denmark goal.

The 28-year-old Wales shot-stopper made 13 saves across his team s three group games, which is a total that was only bettered by Finland s Lukas Hradecky (15) and Turkey s Ugurcan Cakir (18).

He made on average 6.5 saves per goal conceded, the best record of all goalkeepers who were beaten at least once (Gianluigi Donnarumma and Jordan Pickford both kept three clean sheets), with Wales shipping just twice in three games.

Liverpool trailed for over an hour before left-back Robertson met Mane s brilliant cross towards the end of 90 minutes.

Muller: It will be tough to match 2013 success

Thomas Muller acknowledges it will be extremely difficult for Bayern Munich to emulate a trophy-laden 2013.

After winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and UEFA Champions League under Jupp Heynckes last season in an unprecedented treble for a German side, Bayern have continued to enjoy success following Pep Guardiola s appointment as coach.

Guardiola s men are top of their domestic league, lifted the UEFA Super Cup in August and added the FIFA Club World Cup title on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Raja Casablanca.

Bayern will now enjoy a period of rest due to Germany s mid-season break, and Muller believes the team can have no regrets after a superb year.

It s nearly impossible to play at the level we ve done in this calendar year, the Germany international told the cl…
