Devs can now curate — and get a cut of — fan art sales on Redbubble

Art marketplace Redbubble is debuting a pilot program this week that sees select game developers working with the company to curate fan art on branded Redbubble hubs for their games — and collecting a cut of the proceeds.

While Redbubble is billing this as an easy way for small-scale devs to dabble in merchandising without having to contract artists and launch their own storefronts, it's also a notable effort by an open marketplace to cut creators in on sales of fan-created goods based on their work.

In recent years online marketplaces like Etsy, Redbubble and Threadless have afforded artists an easy way to sell their work, and in the process they've grown rife with fan art based on popular video games. Th…

Developers weigh in on working with Google’s Daydream VR platform

Yesterday, Google announced the creation of a new virtual reality platform called “Daydream” and announced a partnership with ten developers who would be working on content for this new mobile-based platform. Activision Blizzard is using generative AI to hawk games that don’t exist

Activision Blizzard has been using generative AI to create online ads for games that do not actually exist.

VGC spotted promos for three fake titles—Guitar Hero Mobile, Crash Bandicoot Brawl, and Call of Duty: Zombie Defender—on Instagram. The ads lead to mockup app store pages on a site called Geeklab, where upon clicking "Get," viewers are treated to the message: "Thanks for your interest! This isn't a real game, but could be some day! We'd love if you could answer this short survey, which could help inform the potential future of this game. Your feedback really matters to us!"

Last week, the Call of Duty …

Five takeaways from GDC Europe 2013

The GDC Europe conference is over for another year (Gamasutra's full coverage here), and as partner event Gamescom begins to wind down on the press front, I've been collating the various tidbits that I've taken away from this week. There was already plenty to think about with regards to the various talks that were given over the last several days, but numerous conversations I had with developers, publishers et al also cemented a number of key points that appeared to brim to the surface on multiple occasions. Here's the five main talking points that I seemingly couldn't escape from throughout the week.

Dip in coin consumption sees Gree’s earnings tumble

Much like its rival DeNA, Japanese social games company Gree saw its earnings slide last quarter — and like its rival, this was mainly down to a decrease in game currency consumption. Gree says that overall consumption of coins (its in-game currency) was down 10 percent quarter-over-quarter, mostly due to continued decline on feature phones and in browser. Coin consumption on smartphones now accounts for around 68 percent of the company's total coin consumption. The company says that its upcoming first-party and partner titles should do the trick, with 10 titles planned for release during the second half of the fiscal year — although Gree still expects to see reduced profits for the next quarter too. For the second quarter ended December 31, 2013, Gree posted r…
